Weekly output: Super Bowl ad-meme fame, drone anxiety, wireless carriers, Tech Night Owl, Verizon login failures

We’re now over a month into 2015, and yet when I looked down at the dates I’d typed below, half of them ended in “2014.” It’s a good thing I don’t write checks anymore.

2/2/2015: Meet the Software Developer Responsible for One of the Super Bowl’s Most Memorable Tweets, Yahoo Tech

As I was catching up on Facebook after the game, I saw my NASA-Tweetup pal Jared Smith (he and I met at the STS-135 launch) wondering if he should correct a site that had credited somebody else for his visual commentary on Seattle’s play calling and Nationwide’s dead-kid ad. At the same time, some of my Yahoo Tech colleagues were talking about Jared’s tweet in our HipChat chat room. I said I could make some inquiries, Jared and I had a quick chat via Twitter direct messages, and this post resulted.

Yahoo Tech drone-anxiety post2/3/2015: How to Stop Worrying and Learn To Love Drones, Yahoo Tech

This post went up Tuesday afternoon instead of Tuesday morning because my editor correctly called out some missing angles in the original draft. That led me to interview another two sources and file a more nuanced version. (All such nuances were lost on the tough guys who showed up in the comments to brag about their readiness to pop off with a shotgun if they saw a drone over their property.) A day later, I was amused to see the NYT’s Farhad Manjoo come to about the same conclusion as me about the public image and hindered potential of drones.

2/6/2015: The Best Wireless Carriers, The Wirecutter

My latest major update to this guide factors in Sprint’s latest deals and a round of price cuts at Verizon. By “major update” I mean something involving, say, 10 or more hours of work; if I counted every smaller revision, this guide would show up in this weekly feature a lot more often.

2/7/2015: February 8, 2015 — Kirk McElhearn and Rob Pegoraro, Tech Night Owl

Host Gene Steinberg and I talked about where Radio Shack went wrong, the FCC’s strong net-neutrality proposals, and Dish Network’s Sling TV.

2/8/2015: Verizon password pains go unexplained, USA Today

The responses to my post here about Verizon’s site rejecting a valid password in one browser but not others persuaded me there was a column in it. This piece also offers a couple of money-saving tips for Verizon Wireless subscribers, so if you’re one I encourage you to read through to the end.
